Unit Title: How can I help my community?

Grade 8: 14 weeks

Area of Interaction: Community Service

Significant Concept: Artists and designers contribute positively to communities.

MYP Unit Question: How can I use art to positively impact on my community?

Independently brainstorm and create a range of age appropriate and feasible ideas appropriate for situation with teacher guidance.
Select valid ideas and create effective and logical plan using available time and appropriate resources.

Lesson Content:
Week 1-Pencil sketching of views of the school-teacher demo about composition and perspective and pencil use and intro. Gaudi and Le Corbusier.
Week 2-Use of pencil to develop views of the school and start copies of either Gaudi or Le Corbusier
Week 3-Art critique and reflection work. Start view of the school using the style of one architect.
Week 4-Complete view of the school (as above) and develop this into a mono-print-teacher demo.
Week 5-Descriptive writing on a walk around your redesigned school. Mono printing.
Week 6-Use preparation work to develop an idea for a painting- quality of line either straight or curved should be the theme.
Week 7- Perspective tasks-teacher demo. Drawing up for painting.
Week 8-Artist research on an architect of their choice-written work. Continue with drawing up for painting. Colour mixing and practice tasks with paint-colour wheel.
Week 9-Painting with poster paint-teacher demo and start.
Week 10-Painting.
Week 11-Reflection on work-peer critique and completion
Week 12-Look at a modern architecture in art-Carel Weight and Hopper. Develop a frieze that shows detail of the students final piece in relief.
Week 13- Cardboard frieze construction. Start paint.
Week 14- Continue with painting frieze. Reflection on completed tasks via student presentations of independent and group work.

UNIT TWO: January-April 2014

Unit Title: How do other people’s choices affect me?

Grade 8: 12 weeks

Week 1-Research on Klimt and Hundertwasser-draw a section of an image. Complete questions.
Week 2-Draw human figures seated and at repose
Week 3-Develop a figures or figures into a mural composition using Klimt devices and Hundertwassers approach to natural forms.
Week 4-Complete composition using watercolour.
Week 5-Mono printing and coloured ink work.
Week 6-Use preparation work to develop an idea for a painting using at least 2 techniques.
Week 7- Drawing up for painting.
Week 8-Artist research on an Art Nouveau artist of their choice-written work. Continue with drawing up for painting. Colour mixing and practice tasks with paint-colour wheel.
Week 9-Painting with acrylic paint-teacher demo and start. Practice in DW.
Week 10-Painting.
Week 11-Painting.
Week 12- Reflection on completed tasks via student presentations of independent and group work.
