UNIT ONE August-December 2013

Unit Title: What impacts have creations had on individual, societies and the world?

Grade 11: 14 weeks

Area of Interaction: Human Ingenuity

Significant Concept: Art and design impacts on our world.

MYP Unit Question: Is art and design a product of environment or a tool with which to shape it?

Research and writing task on the concept of value in art, reference Pop Art, Koons and Damien Hirst-Criterion A

Identify primary and secondary sources of information with teacher guidance.

Beginning to use tools to evaluate and improve their work.
With guidance can reflect on their progress at regular intervals.

Independently brainstorm and create a range of age appropriate and feasible ideas appropriate for situation with teacher guidance.
Select valid ideas and create effective and logical plan using available time and appropriate resources.
 

Lesson Content:

Week 1-Pencil sketching of everyday objects-teacher demo about composition and pencil use and intro.  Pop art as an example of art responding to innovation/new objects and changing economy.

Week 2-Use of pencil to develop sketches. Complete a photomontage showing what is important in your community (definitions of community)-teacher demo.

Week 3-Art critique and reflection work.

Week 4- Brainstorm and develop ideas for a painting or computer generated image with the title: Just What is it that makes my community so different, so appealing?-comment on what is of value.

Week 5- Draw prep sketch for final piece and colour-pastels or watercolour-teacher demo.

Week 6- Develop a final composition to show the concept of value. Explain the concept in writing.

Week 7- Colour mixing and practice tasks with paint-colour wheel. Make two prep pieces that show the use of colour to create mood.

Week 8- Drawing up for painting.

Week 9- Continue with drawing up for painting.

Week 10-Painting with acrylic paint-teacher demo and start.

Week 11-Painting.

Week 12-Painting. Research on an artist that features the concept of what is of value in their community-Koons, Hirst etc. Essay title: Artists show the value of objects or control the value of objects?

Week 13- Reflection on work-peer critique and completion

Week 14- Reflection on completed tasks via student presentations of independent and collaborative work.

UNIT TWO January-April 2014

Unit Title: How should people make decisions considering the consequence affect everybody?

Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education

Significant Concept: My art is a product of my culture, relationships and experiences.

Research and writing task on Stanley Spencer and Frida Kahlo-Criterion A
Painting/Mixed Media/texture or assemblage-Criterion B, D
Reflection/presentation task (written)-Criterion C

Week 5- Draw prep sketch for final piece and colour-pastels or watercolour-teacher demo.

Week 6- Develop a final composition to show the concept-word association tool

Week 7- Colour mixing and practice tasks with paint-colour wheel. Make two prep pieces that show the use of colour to create a mood that says something about you.

Week 8- Drawing up for painting.

Week 9- Painting or 3D.

Week 10-Painting or 3D

Week 12- Reflection on work-peer critique and completion
